Ulster Winter Sports Wrap Up0

Three years ago the Ulster Men’s Basketball team finished their season with a 0-26 record. The Ulster Wrestling program also did not register any wins as the program was still 2 years away from being brought back after being cut in 1979. This past winter those same two winless programs combined to complete the most successful season for Ulster Athletics in recent memory with both programs representing the college at their respective national championship tournaments.

The Men’s Basketball team finished with an 18-11 record and won the Region XV Championship title for the first time since the 1970’s. The team then went on to win three straight road games in the District XII Tournament to win the district championship and qualify for the NJCAA DII Tournament in Danville, Illinois for the first time in school history. Sophomore Tyreik Johnson and Head Coach Justin Maxwell were recognized by the district as Tournament MVP and Coach of the Year respectively.

In only their second season back the Wrestling team finished in 3rd place in the North East District Championship Tournament and they crowned their first ever individual district champion in Freshman Mike Fekishazy. The Senators also qualified a school record of five wrestlers to compete at the NJCAA Wrestling National Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa with Patrick Carroll, Lakell Martin, Matt Shields, Bruce McLee and Fekishazy all earning bids to compete. During the year Ulster also swept Mid-Hudson Conference opponent SUNY Sullivan in home and away dual meet matches to unofficially win the conference title.

Men’s Basketball players Alex Karamanos and Tyreik Johnson and Wrestlers Bruce McLee and Mike Fekishazy were recognized during the season by the Mid-Hudson Conference as their Athlete of the Week. Karamanos was also named a First-Team All Mid-Hudson Conference and DII All-Region, Johnson earned First-Team All-Region as well and their teammate Shawn Jansen was a Second-Team Conference and Region selection despite missing more than half of the season with a broken hand. On the mats Carroll, Martin, Shields, Fekishazy, McLee, Javier Castaneda, John Miller and Frank Cincotta all earned All-District Honors at the District Championship Tournament.
