MEN’S BASKETBALL

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 6 Maxx Miller (White Plains, NY/Mount St. Michael) and Tremaine Fraiser (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) netted 24 points apiece, and Raykwon Fenton (Bronx, NY/Holcombe Rucker HS) added 20 points as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team rallied to defeat Ulster Community College, 97-87 on Tuesday night at SUNY Ulster.

Much of Westchester’s 71-61 win over the Senators on Dec. 5, the game was a battle as the hosts jumped out to an early lead, and did not seem to want to relinquish it. Ulster led by 10 at halftime, and seemed poised to score an upset win. However, WCC had other plans. Fraiser scored 16 of his points during the second half, and Miller chipped in 15 points over the final 20 minutes. The Vikings had another solid outside shooting game, registering eight three-point baskets.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 8 Seven Vikings scored in double figures, including Raykwon Fenton (Bronx, NY/Holcombe Rucker HS), who scored 21 points, and Tremaine Fraiser (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) who added 17 points as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team broke the 100-point mark again, defeating visiting Monroe-Bronx 108-74 on Thursday night in Viking Gymnasium.

WCC led from start to finish, leading 53-27 at halftime, and stretching the lead to 44 points at one point during the second half. Every Viking who played scored at least four points.

Pierre Lys (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) chipped in 15 points, Demetrius Whitney (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) added 12 points, Maurice Hollis(Bronx, NY/Tuckahoe HS) accounted for 11 second-half points, while Gabriel Cruz (Bronx, NY/In-Tech Academy) added 12 points of his own

SATURDAY FEBRUAY 10 Tremaine Fraiser (Port Chester, NY/Trinity Catholic) scored a team-high 20 points, and Raykwon Fenton (Bronx, NY/Holcombe Rucker HS) scored all 15 of his points during the second half of play as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team rallied for an 82-59 win over Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday at CCRI. With the win, an opponent still has not outscored WCC during 22 games this season.

CCRI came out flying, outscoring the Vikings 13-4 over the first 3:57, and the hosts led by nine as late as 13:25 remaining in the first half, and 21-15 with 11:37 to play in the opening stanza. However, Westchester rallied late, taking a 30-28 lead with 5:29 to play in the first half. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the half.

The second half was a completely different story as WCC went ahead quickly and never looked back. The Vikings outscored CCRI an incredible 46-23 during the final 20 minutes, leading at one point by as many as 31 before a late Knight rally made things closer.

Five Vikings scored in double figures as Pierre Lys (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands chipped in 14 points, Drew Bronen (Suffern, NY/Suffern HS) added 13 points, and Gabriel Cruz (Bronx, NY/In-Tech Academy) added 11 points.

MEN’S BOWLING

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 10th Freshman Joseph Salierno (Yonkers, NY/Salesian) enjoyed a good performance, 175 pins per game, and fellow freshman Matthew Rice (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington HS) continued his impressive run with 1,037 total pins, as the Westchester Community College Men’s Bowling Team finished third during Saturday’s Suffolk Invitational at Babylon, New York.

Salierno was steady throughout the event, improving each game during singles competition to finish ninth among individual bowlers, and seventh place for All Events. His best game was a 214 during the third singles game. Rice averaged 172.83 for the day, including a team-high 216 during the final singles game to finish 11th in singles play and All Events. The doubles team of Salierno and Rice finished in fourth place, knocking down 1075 total pins.

Also for WCC, Michael Matthews (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michaels) averaged 148.17 pins, and Bryce Collins (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) averaged 145.5 pins per game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 0-2, REGION 0-0, CONFERENCE 0-0)

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 6TH Paige Collins (Queens, NY/Wadleigh HS) netted a career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (28), and Alexandria Knight (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Putnam Valley HS) chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. however the Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team lost a battle with Bronx Community College, 64-61 on Tuesday night at Bronx CC. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 0-8 for the 2017-18 season.

It was a tale of two halves as WCC fell behind early, trailing 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, and 39-26 at halftime. However, the Vikings battled valiantly throughout the second half, outscoring Bronx CC 14-13 during the third quarter, and 21-12 during the final stanza.

Shooting was the big difference between the teams as Bronx shot 58% (28-48) from the floor, while Westchester shot 23% (25-108).

Also for WCC, Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) scored 16 points, and added eight assists, six rebounds, and six steals; and Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) amassed six points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 8TH Alexandria Knight (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Putnam Valley HS) netted her second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) chipped in 12 points, four assists, and two steals. Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team dropped a battle with Borough of Manhattan Community College, 65-54 on Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 0-9 for the 2017-18 season.

Playing the Panthers for the second time in a week, WCC showed significant improvement after falling to BMCC 76-55 on February 1. The visiting Panthers clung to a one-point lead after the opening quarter, but outscored the Vikings 15-7 during the second stanza to take a 30-21 lead into the break. Westchester trailed 49-34 after three quarters, but rallied during the final 10 minutes, bringing the game to as close as six points, before a late BMCC run secured the win.

For WCC, Denise Crockett (Mount Vernon, NY/Thornton HS) added 11 points, while Ambar Rincon (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers HS) chipped in eight points.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 10TH Freshman Shanaya Jones (Bronx, NY/Health Opportunities HS) scored a team-high 19 points, 14 of which came during the second half of play, but the Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team lost 97-26 to Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday at CCRI. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 0-10 for the 2017-18 season.

Facing one of the toughest teams on their schedule, WCC fell behind 29-8 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 42-11 at halftime. As has been the case for much of the season, the Vikings played a much stronger second half, but were unable to make up the deficit.

Also having a strong game for WCC was Paige Collins (Jamaica, NY/Wadleigh HS), who had a team-high 12 rebounds.
