MEN’S BOWLING

FRIDAY MARCH 9 . Freshman Joseph Salierno (Yonkers, NY/Salesian) turned in an outstanding individual performance, knocking down 1071 total pins, as the Westchester Community College Men’s Bowling team concluded the 2018 season at the USBC Collegiate Sectionals in Stratford, New Jersey.

After a terrific team season that included a second-place finish at the NJCAA Region XV Championships, and a 12th place finish at the NJCAA National Championships, Salierno and company ended the campaign on a strong note with a great performance against a field that included NCAA Division I, II, and III programs, along with several strong NJCAA entries.

Salierno’s best game was a 212 during the third game

Also for Westchester, Matthew Rice (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington HS) finished 164th with 937 total pins, and Michael Matthews (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michaels) ended his season with 889 total pins, good for a 169th place finish. Congratulations to Sacred Heart University’s Women’s team, who won the Stratford Sectional Team event and Schenectady CC’s women’s team who finished third. Both qualify for the USBC Collegiate National Championship in Lincoln, Nebraska. Both teams were regular entrants in tournaments hosted by Westchester.

BASEBALL (RECORD 3-2, REGION 0-0, CONFERENCE 0-0)

TUESDAY MARCH 6 (West Harrison, NY) – Nicholas Antenucci (Yonkers, NY/Stepinac) threw a complete-game shutout, and Steve Messerschmitt (Carmel, NY/Carmel HS) went 2 for 3 with an RBI as the Westchester Community College Baseball team downed visiting Kingsborough Community College, 10-0 on Tuesday at Silver Lake Park in West Harrison, NY. With their third straight win, the Vikings improve to 3-2 for the 2018 season.

After the teams were knotted 0-0 at the end of the first inning, the Vikings bats came alive during the second stanza as WCC scored eight runs to break the game wide open. A pair of bases-loaded walks, and two RBI hits by Paul Franzese (Somers, NY/Somers HS) and Jose Delacruz (New York, NY/George Washington HS) were key for Westchester during the rally.

That was all Antenucci would need. After a shaky first inning, the sophomore settled in to dominate the Wave, allowing only three hits while striking out one batter.

Also for WCC, Bobby Wootten (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley HS) went 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
