Westchester Sports Recap0

Tuesday September 11 (Valhalla, NY) – The men’s soccer team fell for the first time in the 2018 campaign as Queensborough converted on a scoring chance four minutes into the second overtime period, handing the Vikings a stunning 1-0 loss.

WCC controlled the ball for much of the first half but was unable to breakthrough on the few scoring opportunities that the team created for themselves. While the Vikings played much of the first half in the offensive zone, their defense limited QCC’s opportunities as well. Freshman goalkeeper Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marista Pio XII) kept the Tigers off the board all game long with 9 total saves but it was the second half that he really came through for WCC. In the 65th minute, QCC had an excellent opportunity to take the lead on a penalty kick but Griza stood tall making an outstanding save to his left to extinguish the threat. In the final minutes of regulation, he also turned away a bouncing shot that had a chance to help the Vikings force overtime.

As the game wore on Westchester found themselves on their heals defending against the Tiger surges. After holding steady for much of the extra time, QCC was finally able to make a crossing pass across the front of the net to be redirected in by the striker.

Tuesday September 11 (Valhalla, NY) – After a stellar start to the 2018 season, the Westchester Community College Men’s Soccer team was ranked #5 in the nation for the latest NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer poll. The Vikings achieved the lofty national ranking after opening the season with consecutive wins over Middlesex County College, Region 19 powerhouse Bergen Community College, and local rival Monroe-Bronx College.

The honor is the second time this season that WCC has been recognized nationally as freshman Goalkeeper Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil/Colegio Marista Pio XII) was named the NJCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Player of the Week one week ago.

Westchester CC returns to action on Friday, September 14 when the Vikings travel to Dutchess County, New York for a 7:30 p.m. match-up with Dutchess CC at Our Lady of Lourdes High School.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14 (Poughkeepsie, NY) – Freshman Luis Galeano (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck HS) notched the first hat-trick of his career. Freshman Jose Tovar (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS) led an outstanding defensive effort that allowed only three shots on goal as the Westchester Community College Men’s Soccer team improved to 4-1 with a 3-1 win over Dutchess Community College on Friday night at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, New York.

With the win, the Vikings open Mid-Hudson Conference play with a 1-0 record, and improve to 2-1 in Region XV play.

The night featured an inauspicious beginning for the Vikings as Dutchess (0-2, 0-1 Mid Hudson Conference) opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 22nd minute. However, that would be the extent of the Falcon offense as the Vikings defense remained stout for the remainder of the game.

Then, Galeano took over. 10 minutes after Dutchess opened the scoring, Galeano scored on a free kick to tie the game 1-1. 11 minutes later, he tapped in a rebound to give WCC the lead for good, and WCC took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

14 minutes into the second half, Galeano completed the hat trick, scoring on a free kick for the second time in the evening, and giving Westchester all of the offense they would need. Galeano now leads WCC with six goals and 13 points for the season.

Westchester owned a decisive possession advantage, and out-shot Dutchess 19-4. The Vikings also took seven corner kicks to only two attempts for the hosts.

Viking goalie Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS (Brazil)/Colegio Marista Pio XII) was only tested three times during the evening, but his two huge saves on wide open Dutchess attempts late in the game preserved the win.

Overall, during WCC’s 4-1 start, the Vikings have allowed four goals, and have yet to allow more than a single goal in any game.
