MEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD (8-4, REGION 2-2, CONFERENCE 1-1)

THURSDAY NOV. 29 (Valhalla, NY) – TUESDAY DECEMBER 11 (Suffern, NY) – Sophomore Maurice Hollis (Bronx, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored a career-high 16 points, including 10 during a terrific first-half stretch, as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team cruised to an 89-71 win over Rockland Community College on Tuesday night at Rockland. With the win, the Vikings improve to 8-3 overall, 3-1 in Mid-Hudson Conference play, and 2-1 in NJCAA Region XV competition.

Westchester jumped to a lead immediately after the opening tip-off, and never looked back. The Vikings led 49-29 at halftime, and increased the lead to 30 during the second half before a late Rockland run made things closer.

Five Vikings scored in double-figures. Devan Lawson (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley HS) had 11 points and eight rebounds, Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) chipped in 14 points to go with nine assists and six rebounds, Nathan Emanuel (Suffern, NY/Suffern HS) had 12 points after going six-for-seven from the floor, and Sean Hackes (White Plains, NY/Wakefield HS) had 10 points. Also for WCC, Miles Haughton (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) had 10 rebounds, while Fabian Johnson (New York, NY/Our Savior Lutheran) added 11.

Westchester enjoyed another fine evening on the board, outrebounding Rockland CC 59-26, and WCC shot 48% compared to Rockland’s 41%

THURSDAY DECEMBER 13 (Loch Sheldrake, NY) – Freshman Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) scored a team-high 21 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Miles Haughton (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) notched a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team closed out the 2018 portion of their schedule with an 84-67 loss to Sullivan Community College on Thursday night at SUNY Sullivan. With the loss, the Vikings enter 2019 with an 8-4 overall record, a 3-2 ledger in Mid-Hudson Conference play, and a 2-2 mark against NJCAA Region XV competition.

The game was a tale of two halves as Sullivan (8-3, 2-0 Mid-Hudson Conference, 2-0 Region XV) stormed out to a fast 10-4 lead, before Westchester chipped away at the deficit. With eight minutes remaining in the opening half, a Fabian Johnson (New York, NY/Our Savior Lutheran) tied the game at 19-19, and two minutes later, a Zayer three-pointer gave the Vikings their first lead of the game, 26-24. Sullivan took a 33-31 lead as the final seconds ticked down in the first half, but a buzzer-beating lay-up by sophomore Jon Brennan (Irvington, NY/Iona Prep) tied the game at 33 heading into halftime.

However, after a Haughton dunk tied the game at 35 early in the second half, the Generals went on a big run to take a 14-point lead, and force the Vikings to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Westchester brought it back to as close as a 10-point deficit.

Also having a big game for Westchester was sophomore Maurice Hollis (Bronx, NY/Tuckahoe HS), who capped off a tremendous week with a 10-point effort, while freshman Robert Pope (Bronx, NY/Lehman HS) added 10 rebounds.
