SOCCER (RECORD 4-2-0, REGION 4-2-0, CONFERENCE 3-0-0)

Joel Arevallo of the Westchester Community College’s Soccer team has been named the Mid-Hudson Conference Athlete of the Week.

Arevallo scored both goals in the Viking’s season opening 2-1 win at Queensborough Community College. He scored the game winner with six minutes remaining. Arevallo scored a goal and had five assists in the Viking’s next two games, wins over Conference rivals Dutchess and Ulster.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 19 The Vikings beat Rockland 5-4 at Rockland, in a Mid-Hudson Conference, Region XV match, to continue undefeated.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 21 (New Rochelle, NY) – Despite dominating play in nearly every statistical category, the Westchester Community College Men’s Soccer team could not overcome a slow start, losing for the first time this season, 4-0 to Monroe Community College in a game played at City Park in New Rochelle, New York. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 4-1 on the season, and 3-1 in Region 15 play.

Monroe (2-2, 2-2) flipped the recent script on WCC, scoring in the game’s opening minutes, and the Express were able to capitalize on a rare slow start for the Vikings to score all four of their goals during the game’s opening 41 minutes.

However, Westchester battled the entire game, outshooting Monroe 18-12, attempting eight corner kicks to Monroe’s single attempt, and establishing a significant edge in time of possession. The difference was the play of the Monroe goalkeeper, who stopped all nine shots he faced.

For Westchester CC, sophomore Jamar Gale and freshman Franco Landron de Guevarra enjoyed stellar games, combining for 13 of the Vikings 19 shots.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 23 After leading 1-0 at the half the Vikings gave up two second half goals and fell to Nassau 2-1 out on Long Island.
