MEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 4-0, REGION 0-0, CONFERENCE 0-0)

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 9 There were many fans attending Thursday night’s men’s basketball game between Westchester Community College, and Sullivan Community College, the nation’s sixth-ranked team, who might have expected a 50-16 caliber halftime score, and even more who likely anticipated an 86-45 kind of final between a team considered a national championship contender, and a program new to existence after a three-year hiatus. However, what transpired over 40 minutes in Viking Gymnasium was an upset of shocking proportions. In their third game back on the hardwood, Westchester Community College single-handedly shook up the NJCAA national basketball rankings with an incredible 41-point win in front of a packed gymnasium to improve to 3-0, and resoundingly announce their return to the national stage.

The first few minutes were played very slowly as neither team could find a rhythm, a pace that was broken by a Westchester decision to follow-up a three-point play by Randy Stephens with a full-court press, a press that led to three consecutive steals of inbounds passes, six straight points, and a 9-4 lead. With momentum firmly on their side, the Vikings simply dominated the visiting Generals with an incredible defensive effort, and an end-to-end game that yielded dozens of fast-break points. WCC ended the first half with a 30-8 run that gave the Vikings their 34-point halftime lead.

The second half saw much of the same as WCC led by nearly 50 points at times, and coasted to victory.

Four Vikings scored in double figures as Brandon Martin and Tremaine Frasier each scored 22 points, while Pierre Lys added 19 points, and Stephens added 13 points. Westchester also shot an outstanding 16 for 21 from the free throw line.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 11 Sophomore Tremaine Fraiser scored a game-high 23 points, including a 17-point outburst during the first half, and fellow sophomore Randy Stephens added 16 points as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team capped an incredible week with a 75-64 win over visiting Rowan College at Burlington County on Saturday at Viking Gymnasium. With the win, the Vikings improve to an impressive 4-0 start to the 2017-18 season, including three wins during a six-day span this week.

The start was a sloppy one for both teams as the Vikings took to the court for the second time in three days. Rowan (1-2) held an early edge, scoring the game’s first four points, and led 6-3 just over five minutes in before WCC went on a run, scoring six straight points after a time-out, including two consecutive dunks on fast breaks. Westchester extended the lead to as many as 13 points with 6:30 to play in the first half, before a Rowan run made it a seven-point game with 3:26 to play. A late Viking run of their own gave the hosts a 39-26 lead at halftime.

The second half saw WCC sizzle at the start. A Raykwon Fenton three-pointer with 15:17 to play gave Westchester a 20-point lead, a lead that would extend to as high as 22 points, 56-24 with 14:49 remaining. However, the Barons would not go down without a fight. During a game marked by numerous turnovers by both teams, Rowan methodically chipped away at the lead, and trimmed the deficit to as few as eight points with five minutes to play. However, the game would get no closer as two clutch late baskets by sophomore Brandon Martin sealed the win for Westchester.
