Men’s Tennis: Rockland’s Almonte Wins Flight Two Singles Crown

Rockland’s Lysander Payano-Almonte won the Flight Two singles championship at the recently concluded NJCAA Men’s Division III National Tennis Championship at Plano, Texas.
Seeded number two, Almonte defeated Alex Koziel of Illinois Valley CC 6-1, 6-2 and Emir Hamzic of Brookdale CC 6-3, 6-4 to reach the flight two finals. Almonte beat Andew Massaro of Rowan 6-2, 6-4 to take the crown.
In other singles competition, Yash Bhagat made it to the semi final round of the fourth flight single after defeating Ryan Charlebois of Onondaga 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2. Bhagat loss to second-seed Greg Del Favero of Mercer 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the semis. Jonathan Compres loss to top-seed Andres Jacome of Mercer 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter final round of the first flight singles. Jervahn Marshall loss to Jeremy Gottlieb of Mercer 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the quarter final round of third flight. Warren Brown loss to Nick Munson of IL Valley 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter final round of the fifth flight. Jacob Rosenfeld loss to Vignesh Sundaram of Oxford of Emory 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter final round of sixth flight.
In doubles competition, the duo of Compres and Almonte defeated Massaro and Jon McCarthy of Rowan 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 in the quarter final of top flight doubles. The duo loss to Peter Higgins and Michael Pioso of Oxford of Emory 6-4, 6-3 in the semi final. The duo of Brown and Marshall and Bhagat and Rosenfeld loss their quarter final matches in the second and third flights. Brown and Marshall won the second flight consolation bracket.
