Elliott Earns Second Region XV Golf Medalist

Sullivan County Community College’s Richard Elliott shot a second round 35, which combined with an opening round score of 72, gave the sophomore medalist honors for the second straight year at the Region XV Golf Championship at the Phillip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course in Haverstraw. Elliott’s combined score of 107 was nine strokes better than Suffolk’s Andrew Owad (116). The tournament’s final round had to be shortened to nine holes due to rainy playing conditions, and the threat of afternoon thunderstorms.

Nassau Community College took home their third straight Region XV team championship trophy. With a score of 491, the Lions bested Island-rival Suffolk by 19 strokes. SUNY Ulster, the Mid Hudson Conference champion, finished in third (517), which was nine better than tournament host Rockland (526).

Nassau declined their automatic berth to the NJCAA Tournament. Suffolk will now represent Region XV in the four-round event. Five indiduals will join Region XV “Coach-of-the-Year” Travers Breen and the Sharks at the National Tournament, which is set for June 3-7 at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, New York. The individual qualifiers include: Richard Elliott (Sullivan), Benedict Tagle (Rockland), Daniel Tagle (Rockland), Connor Stenglein (Ulster) and Chris Moruzzi (Ulster).
