Freshman Luis Galeano (Mamaroneck, NY/Rye Neck HS) had a goal and an assist, and fellow freshman Wali Azizi (Buchanan, NY/Hendrick Hudson HS) did the same as the Westchester Community College Soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 4-1 win over Middlesex County Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Middlesex. With the win, Head Coach Alfio Carrabotta earned his first career collegiate victory as the Vikings open the season 1-0.

Westchester left no doubt as the Vikings opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a Galeano penalty kick goal. WCC scored twice during a three-minute span midway through the opening half. Kevin Gonzalez(White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) scored on an assist from Jose Tovar (Yonkers, NY/Riverside HS) and less than three minutes later Azizi notched his first goal of the season off of a Galeano assist.

Up 3-0 at halftime, Franco Ladron De Guevarra (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute to make a 4-0 lead. Middlesex (0-1) scored late in the game to make it 4-1.

While shots were an even 8-8, Westchester used a dominant defensive effort to control play for much of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Guilherme Griza (Novo Hamburgo-RS [Brazil]/Colegio Marista Pio XII) was stellar in net, making seven saves. Additionally, freshman Leonardo Vargas (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle HS) enjoyed a terrific day on the defensive end.

Despite a strong possession advantage, and a commanding edge in shots, the game was neck and neck for the first 50 minutes as the teams were tied 0-0 at halftime. However, the possession edge turned into goals for the Vikings during the final 40 minutes of play as Tovar found Galeano off of a fantastic crossing pass at 50:23 for the 1-0 lead. Twenty minutes later, Franco Ladron De Guevarra (White Plains, NY/White Plains HS) doubled the lead, scoring his second goal of the season on an almost identical play when a Chris Vallejo (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville HS) crossing pass found Guevarra’s foot, and the sophomore promptly one-timed the ball to the back of the net to make it 2-0.

From there, the Vikings defense allowed the hosts to cruise to victory as freshman goalkeeper Guilherme Griza
