MEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 14-4, REGION 3-1, CONFERENCE 3-1)

Men’s Basketball Rallies Past Bronx CC 80-66 for Ninth Straight Win

January 16 – For a team averaging nearly 85 points per game for the 2019-2020 season, to start a contest by going scoreless for more than six minutes of play must have seemed like an eternity for the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team. The same for their opponents, Bronx Community College, who spent the final 34 minutes of play on Thursday night simply trying to keep up. Freshman Willie Davis (Bronx, NY/Logan HS) scored 14 points on 5 for 6 shooting, and 11 different Vikings scored points as the Vikings notched their ninth straight win with a 80-66 win over Bronx CC on Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium. With the win, Westchester is now 16-4 for the 2019-2020 season.

The number nine that Westchester extended its winning streak to with the win carried a lot of significance on Thursday. Westchester missed its first nine shots, and Bronx (9-10) jumped out to a 9-0 lead, carrying play for much of the early going. However, once the Vikings got things going, they spent long stretches of their own scoring at will. Once the Vikings finally scored to make it a 9-2 game with 13:55 to play in the first half, Westchester went on a 22-4 run. When Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) converted a lay-up with 7:39 to play until halftime, Westchester led 22-13. The Vikings led by as many as 13 points late in the first half, before taking a 39-28 lead into the break.

The second half could not have started better for Westchester as the Vikings scored the first 14 points of the second stanza, over a 3:21 span, to make it a 53-28 game, and all but put things away.

Three Vikings scored in double figures as Zayer added 13 points, while Justin Huger (Harlem, NY/Thurgood Marshall HS) added 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Also for the Vikings, sophomore James Brady (Yonkers, NY/Mount Saint Michael) added nine points and nine rebounds.

Westchester won the game in large part thanks to a 54-34 edge in rebounds, and a 25-21 advantage in turnovers. Both teams shot 40% from the floor.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 8-8, REGION 3-1, CONFERENCE 3-1)

Women’s Basketball Rolls Past Bronx CC 102-50 behind freshman’s First Triple-Double to reach .500

January 16 – During the three seasons since Westchester Community College brought back Women’s Basketball, Westchester Community College did not score 100 points in a single game. As the Vikings’ third season winds down, breaking the century mark is suddenly becoming a habit. Freshman Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS) notched her first career triple-double with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists, and fellow freshman Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) added 30 points, six assists, and six steals, as the Vikings rolled past visiting Bronx Community College, 102-50 on Thursday night at Viking Gymnasium. With the win, Westchester CC has now reached .500 with an 8-8 overall record. Westchester CC began the 2019-2020 season with a 1-5 start.

The victory also marked the second straight time Westchester broke 100 points in a single game.

It was a game of raining three-pointers for Westchester CC as the Vikings converted a season-high 16 of them, including three straight to begin the game as Westchester jumped out to a 9-2 lead, and never looked back. Bronx did make it interesting as a pair of Bronco three-pointers with 4:57 to play in the first quarter made it a 10-7 game. However, from there, Westchester went on a 15-2 run to take a 25-9 lead. Westchester led 25-11 at the end of the first stanza.

For the second straight game, Westchester exploded during the second quarter. After scoring a season-high 37 points during the second stanza of a 107-46 win over Monroe-Bronx JV on Jan. 7, Westchester scored 35 points during the second 10 minutes of Thursday’s game, to take a 60-25 lead into the halftime break. The second half saw much of the same.

Westchester shot 47% for the game, including a season-best 43% from three-point range, and the Vikings forced 28 Bronx turnovers, while committing only 16. The Vikings also owned a 48-40 rebounding edge.

Four Vikings ended the game in double figures as sophomore Jada Tom (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) scored 26 points, while adding six rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while freshman Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) added a career-high 19 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Also for Westchester, freshman Sarah Placide (New City, NY/Clarkstown North HS) pulled in a career-high 14 rebounds.
