Westchester Vikings

MONDAY May 8 The Vikings continued a tied, suspended game with Ulster by scoring 5 runs in the top of the 8th to go onto a 9-5 Conference win. Steve Guzman went 3 for 3 with a double, a triple and 3 RBIs… MONDAY May 8 Brian Corporan (Bronx) and Paul Franzese (Somers HS) each went 2 for 4 as the Vikings scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th to finish the regular season with a 9-1 win over Ulster. The Vikings clinched the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship and the #1 seed in the Region XV Tournament.

THURSDAY MAY  11 The Region XV Baseball tournament underwent some scheduling changes due to the expected inclement weather this weekend and the first round of the tournament was moved to the higher seed. The tournament was originally slated to take place at SUNY Sullivan from May 11-13th. Top seeded Westchester was pitted against the #4 seed Rockland Hawks as #2 Sullivan was set to take on #3 Dutchess.

Rockland got on the board first as they scored a run in the top of the first. WCC quickly answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Paul Franzese (Somers HS/Somers, NY) laced a hit into right center to get WCC on the board. Westchester would take the lead the second thanks to RBI’s from Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Scarsdale, NY) and Scottie Giordano (Croton Harmon HS/Croton, NY) on consecutive doubles.

Giordano also got the start for the Vikes and settled down after the first inning, holding RCC scoreless inning after inning. The Rockland starter was equal to the task as the teams traded zeros until the 8th where Giordano got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Hawks at bay. He then set Rockland down in order in the 9th for the complete game win. Over 9 innings, he scattered six hits, striking out five. He was also 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. Tenya who got the start in left field, was also 2 for 4 with an RBI as Alex Borman (Huntington HS/Huntington, NY) had two hits including a double.

FRIDAY MAY 12 The Vikings baseball team earned a spot in the NJCAA Region XV Finals yesterday with a 10-8 win over Sullivan. The team is now 2-0 in the double elimination tournament and will play for the championship on Monday at host school SUNY Sullivan. The game is scheduled for a 12 noon first pitch.

WCC got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first. The lead was short lived though as Sullivan put up two runs in the top of the 3rd take the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Scottie Giordano (Croton Harmon HS/Croton, NY) hit a solo shot to even the score.

The offensive battle continued though as the Generals plated two runs in the top of the 4th only to see the Vikings respond with six runs in the bottom of the inning. It was a lead that they would not relinquish, though Sullivan would continue to threaten all throughout the game. In the top of the 8th, SCC would post two runs to bring the score to 9-8 and after an insurance run by Westchester in the bottom of the inning, the Generals had the tying runs on base before the Vikings closed it out.

Giordano was one of the offensive stars for WCC going 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s. Paul Franzese (Somers HS/Somers, NY) went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Felix Camacho (St. Raymond’s HS/Bronx, NY) also had 2 hits and a run batted in.

Luis Gomez (St. Raymond’s HS/Bronx, NY) took over on the mound in the 4th inning and weathered Sullivan’s offensive barrage, pitching the remaining six innings to pick up his 10th win of the season. The victory for Gomez is a new school record.

The tournament is scheduled to resume Sunday, Monday at 12 noon. After the WCC win, Sullivan then defeated Dutchess in game 5 which moves them into the finals. Since the tournament is double elimination, if the Vikings were to lose in the first championship game, both teams would be 2-1 and would play an “if necessary” championship final after the first game.
