MEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 11-4, REGION 3-1, CONFERENCE 3-1)

A HUGE SECOND HALF LEADS MEN’S BASKETBALL PAST ULSTER CC 101-69
TUESDAY DECEMBER 10 (Stone Ridge, NY) – For the first seven minutes of Tuesday night’s men’s basketball game between Westchester Community College and Ulster CC, it appeared as if the game would go right down to the wire, and it might take the kind of effort the Vikings have not had all season for Westchester to win its third straight game. For the next 33 minutes, that is just the kind of effort the Vikings received. Freshman Justyn Huger (Harlem, NY/Thurgood Marshall HS) notched his first career double-double with a career-high 15 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond’s) scored a career-high 19 points as Westchester exploded for a 101-69 win over the host Senators at Ulster Community College.

With the win, the Vikings are now 10-4 overall, and 2-1 in NJCAA Region XV play.

The tight start let to Westchester jumping ahead 48-35 at halftime, a lead that was not completely comfortable considering the close start. However, the Vikings opened the second half with an 11-0 run to take a 59-35 lead, and all but put the game away. Westchester led by as many 41 points, 91-50 with 5:53 to go before cruising to victory.

Freshman Justin Mazyck (Bronx, NY/Stevenson HS) scored 18 points, while sophomore Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) added 12 points.

Men’s Basketball Stuns #3 Sullivan CC Behind Freshman’s Career-High 23 Points
SATURDAY DECEMBER 14 (Valhalla, NY) – After a 10-1 start to the 2019-2020 season that included multiple victories over nationally elite programs, an eight-game winning streak, and a national ranking of #3 in the nation, the Sullivan Community College Men’s Basketball team entered Saturday’s showdown with Westchester Community College as a legitimate contender for a Division II National Championship once March rolls around. 40 minutes later, if a conversation will be held regarding who are the best teams in the country this season, Westchester CC’s name is firmly a part of the conversation. Freshman Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored a career-high 23 points, and added five rebounds and three assists, and fellow freshman Justin Mazyck (Bronx, NY/Stevenson HS) notched a double-double with 16 points, and 11 rebounds as the Vikings scored perhaps the biggest upset in the NJCAA this season, 70-61 over the visiting Generals.

With the win, Westchester is now 11-4 overall, and 3-1 in both Region XV and Mid-Hudson Conference play.

While entering the game as significant underdogs, Westchester proved to be ready to play from the start, as Mazyck nailed a three-pointer 13 seconds into the game to make it 3-0. While both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early, the Vikings methodically pulled ahead, scoring eight straight points to take a 13-5 lead after a Mazyck basket with 13:52 to play in the first half. Later in the half, off of an inbounds pass, Moore found freshman Dimaunie Meredith (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Dobbs Ferry HS) with a perfect lob pass that became an alley-oop to give WCC a 19-11 lead with 9:08 to play.

However, from there, Sullivan fought back. A 13-5 General run tied the score at 24 with 3:06 to play in the first half, and Sullivan (10-2, 3-1) ended the first half on a 15-3 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.

Sullivan worked to put the game away quickly to open the second half as a fast break basket gave the Generals a 41-34 lead with 16:12 to play, but Westchester’s energy level only increased as the second half moved along. The Vikings out-rebounded Sullivan 29-14 over the final 20 minutes, including 13-3 edge on the offensive glass, giving Westchester all of the extra possessions they would need to even the game and pull ahead.

Sophomore Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond’s) his a pair of free throws with 8:03 to play to complete a 16-3 Viking run, and give the hosts a 50-47 lead. Westchester would lead the rest of the way. The Vikings would hit their final nine free throws to ice the win.

Monti finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while freshman Noe Fleurimond (Greenburgh, NY/Woodlands HS) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Westchester won the turnover battle, committing 15, while forcing 16. Both teams struggled to shoot with Sullivan converting 38% of their shots, while Westchester made 35% of their attempts.

Perhaps the biggest stat of the game was at the free throw line, where Westchester – who has struggled at the line throughout the season – converted 15 of their 17 attempts, while Sullivan was 9 for 15 from the line.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (RECORD 6-7 REGION 3-1, CONFERENCE 3-1)

Women’s Basketball Downs Ulster CC 66-42 behind Prelvukaj’s 21-point effort

TUESDAY DECEMBER 10 (Stone Ridge, NY) – What a difference a year makes. One year ago, when the Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team faced Ulster CC for the first of two Region XV match-ups, a 27-point Viking defeat marked perhaps the low point for a program very much in building mode. One year later, the opening class of the 2019-2020 season for these two programs placed on full display exactly how far the Vikings have come. Freshman Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) scored 21 points, 14 of which came during a spectacular first half, and fellow freshman Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS) scored 22 points as the Vikings led wire-to-wire during a 66-42 win over the Senators at Ulster Community College.

With their third straight win, Westchester is now 6-6 overall, and 3-0 in NJCAA Region XV play. After a 1-5 start, Westchester has now reached .500.

Ruiz notched a double-double, adding 11 steals to her 22-point effort and also chipping in five rebounds and five assists, while Prelvukaj barely missed a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and seven steals to her evening.

Westchester led 19-12 after the first quarter, 40-24 at halftime, and allowed a season-low six points while extending the lead to 53-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Also for Westchester, freshman Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) scored 11 points and had seven rebounds, while Bria Lockley (Yonkers, NY/HS For Teaching & Professions) added 10 points and five steals.

Basketball Falls to Sullivan Community College
SATURDAY DECEMBER 14 (Valhalla, NY) – Freshman Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) scored 15 points and added nine rebounds and five assists, and freshman Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS) added 14 points and four assists, but the Westchester Community College Women’s Basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, 125-47 on Saturday at Viking Gymnasium. With the loss, Westchester is now 6-7 overall, and 3-1 in NJCAA Region XV play.

However, Westchester shot 50% during a terrific second quarter to go into halftime down 62-30. The Generals then shot 58% the rest of the way to cruise to victory.

Westchester enjoyed its best game of the season on the boards, out-rebounding Sullivan 51-48, however, turnovers made a huge difference as Westchester committed 40, while forcing only 14.

Also for the Vikings, freshman Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) had seven points, three rebounds, and three steals, while freshman Sarah Placide (New City, NY/Clarkstown North HS) had a career-high 12 rebounds.
