SATURDAY JANUARY 11 Men’s Basketball Survives late CCRI Rally for 88-87 Overtime Win
(Warwick, RI) – Freshman Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored a career-high 24 points, and freshman Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond’s) added 18 points, as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team earned its seventh straight win with an 88-87 win over Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday night during the opening round of the CCRI Tournament. With the win, the Vikings are now 14-4.

Westchester enjoyed an incredible first half against a strong CCRI squad, scoring 51 points over the first 20 minutes to take a 51-34 lead into halftime.

However, final 20 minutes were a completely different story as CCRI (10-5) when on a tremendous run, outscoring Westchester 27-11 over the first nine minutes of the second half to make it a 62-61 WCC lead.

From there, the final 11 minutes of regulation were simply wild. Westchester led 76-73 as the final second wound down, but a CCRI buzzer-beating three-pointer tied the game, and forced overtime. In the extra session, Westchester quickly made it an 82-77 lead, but CCRI kept battling back. Finally, with CCRI trying to beat the buzzer with the game-winning basket, Moore grabbed a loose ball, and completed a breakaway lay-up to seal the game with 14 seconds remaining. From there, the hosts were able to make it a one-point game once again, but they would get no further.

Freshman Jahmir Appleton (Bronx, NY/Eagle Academy) added 12 points, while sophomore James Brady (Yonkers, NY/Mount St. Michael) added nine points.

(Warwick, RI) – Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by sophomore Anthony Monti (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond’s), who scored a team-high 22 points, as the Westchester Community College Men’s Basketball team notched its eighth straight win, 100-72 over Roxbury Community College on Sunday afternoon at the Community College of Rhode Island Tournament in Warwick, Rhode Island. With the win, Westchester is now 15-4 for the 2019-2020 season.

It was a game far closer than the final score indicated. Playing less than 24 hours after an emotional 88-87 overtime win over CCRI, Westchester struggled to find a rhythm during the early going. The Vikings trailed 12-4 with 14:31 to play in the first half and 23-17 five minutes later, but Westchester scored 13 of the next 20 points to tie the score at 30 with 7:05 to play in the half. A minute later, WCC took their first lead of the game, and Westchester would not trail again, leading 47-45 at halftime.

Westchester opened the second half on a 12-4 run to make the lead double digits. Midway through the second half, a 21-5 Viking run made it an 84-58 lead with 8:36 to play, and the Vikings cruised from there.

Freshman Daniel Barrera (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) scored 17 points, while freshman Justyn Huger (Harlem, NY/Thurgood Marshall HS) and sophomore Joe Zayer (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South HS) added 14 points apiece. Also for the Vikings, freshman Malik Moore (Tuckahoe, NY/Tuckahoe HS) scored 10 points.

TUESDAY JANUARY 7 Women’s Basketball Opens 2020 with 107-46 win over Monroe JV
(Valhalla, NY) – If foreshadowing ever comes into account during a college basketball game, it sure reared its head during Tuesday’s Women’s Basketball game between Westchester Community College and Monroe College – Bronx JV. The Vikings accomplished the rare feat of holding a lead before the game even started, as freshman Tina Fabrizi (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck HS) converted one of two free throw attempts as the result of a pre-game administrative technical foul assessed to Monroe to give the Vikings a 1-0 edge before the opening tip-off. The event proved to be a sign of things to come. From there, Westchester scored the game’s first 34 points over a span of 10:54, including a first quarter shutout of the Express, and led by as many as 65 points In route to a 107-46 win over Monroe at Viking Gymnasium.

With the win, Westchester CC is now 7-8 for the 2019-2020 season. The win also marked the first time since the return of Women’s Basketball at Westchester Community College that the Vikings broke the 100-point mark.

During what was perhaps the best start to a game in program history, Westchester led 32-0 at the end of the opening quarter, 69-11 at halftime, and cruised during the second half as they battle to reach .500 during their first full season as a varsity program since a three-year hiatus.

Sophomore Jada Tom (Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton HS) enjoyed the finest game of her career, scoring 27 points, while adding six steals and three assists. Included in her effort was a 26-point, four-steal first half. Also for the Vikings, freshman Donjeta Prelvukaj (Bronx, NY/St. Catharine) led all scorers with 33 points, while adding eight rebounds, eight assists, and six steals. She enjoyed a 5 for 9 effort from three-point range.

WCC also had double-digit scoring from freshman Jailine Ruiz (Bronx, NY/Bryant HS), who had 19 points to go with seven assists, and six rebounds, while Fabrizi scored 18 points – on 8 for 9 shooting – and added seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

For the game, Westchester shot 55%, compared to 33% for Monroe, while the Vikings also enjoyed a 41-33 advantage in rebounds, and a 39-10 edge in turnovers.
